Donna Janiec joined Queen's in 1994.
Principal and Vice-Chancellor Patrick Deane announced today that Donna Janiec will conclude her tenure as Vice-Principal (Finance and Administration), following more than 30 years of service at Queen鈥檚. She will continue in the role until her successor is selected and then serve as a Special Advisor to the Principal for an 18-month period to provide continuity on several major initiatives.
鈥淒onna鈥檚 contributions to Queen鈥檚 have been exceptional,鈥 says Principal Deane. 鈥淪he has helped shape the university鈥檚 financial and operational foundations, guided us through periods of significant change, and strengthened our capacity to achieve our strategic goals and academic mission. Respected for both her expertise and collaborative leadership, Donna will have a lasting legacy at Queen鈥檚 and across the higher education sector. While we will miss her leadership in the Vice-Principal role, I am grateful that Queen鈥檚 will continue to benefit from her counsel and experience as Special Advisor during this transition.鈥
Janiec joined Queen鈥檚 in 1994 and has held progressively senior leadership roles, culminating in her appointment as Vice-Principal (Finance and Administration) in 2016. She oversees one of the university鈥檚 most complex portfolios, including Finance, Procurement, Investment Services, Human Resources, Information Technology, Risk and Safety Services, Facilities, and Internal Audit.
During her tenure, Janiec led numerous transformative initiatives including the transition to the University Pension Plan, the development of the first long-term capital asset management plan, and advancing information technology governance and cybersecurity planning. Passionate about sustainability, Janiec also championed many sustainability initiatives, as well as service excellence and equity-focused programs that have enhanced both the employee and student experience.
Janiec has also played a significant leadership role across the post-secondary sector. She has contributed to provincial and national policy discussions through organizations including the Council of Senior Administrative Officers, the Canadian Association of University Business Officers (CAUBO), and the Digital Research Alliance of Canada. Her work has helped shape conversations on financial sustainability, governance, pension reform, and research infrastructure across the country. Most recently, she was awarded the 2026 , CAUBO鈥檚 most prestigious honour.
鈥淚t has been a privilege to serve Queen鈥檚 and work with so many dedicated colleagues, students, staff, faculty, board members, and partners,鈥 says Janiec. 鈥淚 am incredibly proud of what we have accomplished over the past three decades. Queen鈥檚 has a strong and vibrant future ahead with the Bicentennial Vision, and I look forward to continuing to support important university priorities during this transition while making way for the next generation of leadership.鈥
Janiec holds an Honorary Life Membership from the Alma Mater Society in recognition of her dedication to students and her commitment to service extends beyond her responsibilities at Queen鈥檚. She has contributed to the Kingston community through leadership roles with Kingston Health Sciences Centre, Utilities Kingston, the Mayor鈥檚 Task Force on Housing, and numerous other community organizations. These contributions reflect her commitment to public service and the trust she holds as a respected leader both within and beyond the university.
The search for her successor will begin immediately. Details regarding the process will be shared as they become available.
