Ancillary fees are non-tuition related student fees that are levied in addition to tuition or program fees to support activities and services provided by the university or student governments.
Only students affiliated with the Alma Mater Society (AMS) or Society for Graduate and Professional Students (SGPS) are charged ancillary fees and eligible to access student government activities, clubs, on-campus services and the AMS/SGPS health and dental plans.
AMS-affiliated, full-time, undergraduate on-campus degree students are assessed AMS ancillary fees.
AMS-affiliated students are represented by the following Faculty Society members:
- Arts and Science
- Applied Science and Engineering
- Computing
- Commerce
- Concurrent Education (years 1-4 only)
- Health Science
- Nursing
- Physical & Health Education & Kinesiology
Students registered under the Undergraduate Online (Distance) career profile are not assessed ancillary fees and are not eligible to ‘opt in’.
SGPS ancillary fees are assed for SGPS-affiliated, on-campus students with full-time status in:
- the School of Graduate Studies and Postdoctoral Affairs
- the Faculty of Law
- the Faculty of Education,
- the School of Medicine
Students enrolled in programs not affiliated with SGPS membership, are not assessed student ancillary fees and are not eligible to access related services. These programs include:
- Certificates
- Diplomas
- Micro-credentials
- Continuing education courses
- satellite campuses
- other non-credit courses
Opt-In and Opt-Out Process
Optional Ancillary Fee Opt-Out
Students can opt-out of optional fees, online through SOLUS, during the opt-out period* The opt-out process can only be completed once per year. Students are encouraged to review all fees so they are able to make informed decisions about their choices since once confirmed, selections are final.

Health & Dental Fee Opt-Out
Individuals can opt out of the health and dental plans if they provide proof of alternate supplemental Health and Dental coverage during the Fall opt-out period.
