What is law? What gives law its authority? What should happen to those who break the law? These questions are especially challenging in Canada, where British common law, French civil law, and a plurality of Indigenous legal orders co-exist, overlap, and sometimes conflict. In this course, we will study European, colonial, and Indigenous theories of law with a focus on how these theories relate to one another and to the practice of constitutional law and criminal law in Canada.
