(Re)Designing Writing Assignments to Enhance Student Learning

    When:
    Tuesday, December 4, 2018
    9:30 AM – 11:00 AM
    Where:
    Mackintosh-Corry Hall
    Room: F200, Large Collaboration Space
    Find on Campus Map
    Description:

Create or revise your course writing assignments to deepen student learning! In this interactive workshop, you’ll consider why you might ask students to write in the first place, brainstorm discipline-specific genres that go beyond the term paper, explore both informal and formal writing options, and develop strategies for assignment design that highlight writing as an ongoing process rather than a single product. As part of the session, there will be multiple opportunities to receive feedback on your assignment design, so bring an existing writing assignment and/or ideas on a new one you’d like to add to an upcoming course.

    Outcomes:

After completing this session, participants will be able to:

    • select an appropriate genre of writing for a course assignment
    • design writing tasks that match a course’s learning outcomes
    • evaluate assignment prompts and rubrics for clarity of both task and evaluation criteria

    Additional Requirements:

Bring an existing writing assignment you have, or one you’re working on for an upcoming course.
