Gothic to Gore

Description: This workshop course will focus on writing in the horror genre. We will explore a variety of elements of horror in fiction, including atmosphere, suspense, metaphor, monsters, and the uncanny, as well as reading and discussing sample stories from a variety of historical and literary backgrounds. This may include pulp, dystopia, Gothic, fairy tale, and children’s literature, alongside other forms of media (ie. songs, movies, poems). Students will write and revise their own creative pieces throughout the term, learning both craft and workshop etiquette as they provide thoughtful, constructive feedback to their peers. We will also dedicate time to discussing the professional publishing industry as it relates to horror fiction, and potential outlets of publication for students to explore.
