CLAS 834 - Greek Documents and Cultural Contacts
Type: 800 level
Units: 3.00
Term: Fall 2025
Instructor: Dr. Carbon
Delivery: In-Person
Textbook:
This seminar examines Greek inscriptions written on various materials and also Greek papyri (in the original where possible, depending on the level of the students registered; otherwise in translation). On a practical level, the seminar has a twofold aim:
1) to train you in the fundamentals, both traditional and modern, of the study of Greek epigraphy and, to a lesser degree, papyrology;
2) to explore particularly those documents which can inform us about cases of cultural interaction between the Greeks and other groups.
Through specific case-studies and individual projects, the overall goal is to enable you to use these sources of documentary evidence in your own research.
